Blue Jays rookie Brett Bateman leaves game vs. Rays early with hamstring injury

The Toronto Blue Jays lost outfielder Brett Bateman early on Wednesday night due to a hamstring injury.

Bateman appeared to pull up while running out a ground ball he had hit in the top of the third inning of their contest with the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Bateman was spotted bending over and grabbing at the back of his right leg after being called out at first, clearly in some discomfort.

While he remained in the game briefly, Matt Straw came in to hit for him and eventually replaced him in the field in the fifth inning.

Officially, the Blue Jays pulled Bateman with right hamstring tightness. Further specifics on the injury are not yet known.

Bateman entered Wednesday’s game at Tropicana Field with a .283 batting average with four RBI and no home runs this season, though he was only called up to join the Blue Jays earlier this month from their Triple-A affiliate. The Blue Jays landed him in a deal with the Chicago Cubs before the deadline, too, and he made his MLB debut on Aug. 7.

The Blue Jays entered Wednesday’s contest with a 62-65 record, though they’ve won eight of their last 11 games and are fresh off a dominant 10-5 win over the Rays to open the series on Tuesday night. While they are well back in the AL East race, the Blue Jays are just half of a game out of the final AL wild-card spot.
