This did not resemble a retired fighter who merely needs several months in the gym. Broner looked like someone requiring a complete personal overhaul before boxing should enter the conversation.

The hosts repeatedly praised his streaming success and treated his behavior as entertainment. They gave him an opportunity to reassure supporters who feared he had fallen off the wagon. Broner (35-5-1, 24 KOs) denied that everything had gotten out of hand, but his response offered little comfort.

“Things are not out of control. But things can be a lot. Things can definitely be a lot. Right now, we’re just living the life that God gave us, with me and all my brothers. Sometimes they don’t even know. I just doze off, and I just look at these guys,” said Broner to Fighthype.

He later apologized to Shakur Stevenson, Terence Crawford and others for seeing him in such a rough state over the weekend. During the interview, Broner said that it hurt his friends to watch him “in that bad of it,” without explaining exactly what had happened.

Any ring return would require Broner to lose considerable weight and follow a disciplined routine for months. His age technically leaves enough time, but his present condition provides no reason to believe that transformation will happen.

Even a question about one final nostalgic bout went nowhere. Broner became distracted, forgot what he had been asked and returned to discussing his streaming career.

Content creation might be the safer future for him. It provides attention, income and an audience without requiring him to absorb more punishment. The people around Broner may continue hyping another championship run, but that fantasy bears no resemblance to the man sitting in front of the camera.

Without a miraculous turnaround, the former four-division world champion Broner’s boxing career is finished.
