Shakur Stevenson Claims Devin Haney Is Passing On Bigger Payday

Shakur Stevenson Claims Devin Haney Is Passing On Bigger Payday

Shakur Stevenson believes Devin Haney is walking away from a bigger payday by refusing to pursue a fight at 144 pounds. Responding to criticism on X, Stevenson argued Haney would make substantially more money facing him than from the WBO title fight that recently fell apart.

“Ok then no fight and u fans miss out I make a shit ton of money regardless it’s not like I’m in need of anybody.. They bid $6m’s on his fight when he can make way more than that with me don’t be stupid,” Shakur said on X.

Stevenson did not explain how much a Haney fight would generate or where the additional money would come from. His argument rests on the commercial appeal of the matchup rather than the financial advantages Haney holds as the WBO welterweight champion.

The public talk between the two camps has continued for several days. Shakur wants the fight contested at a 144-pound catchweight. Bill Haney has rejected that proposal, insisting Shakur should become the mandatory challenger through the WBO rankings. That route would preserve the champion’s leverage under the sanctioning body’s purse bid rules.

Haney was in line to receive more than $6 million after Top Rank submitted the winning bid for an ordered title defense against Keyshawn Davis. That fight ended when Davis declined to go ahead with the mandatory challenge. Shakur believes a negotiated bout between the two stars would generate a larger payday, although no financial terms have been made public.
