The timing brings extra intrigue to a major fight. Muratalla faces a former Olympic gold medalist who has never been stopped as a professional. Garcia believes his fighter possesses the skills to become the first man to finish Conceicao inside the distance.

“I think he’s got the skills, he’s got the power, he’s got what it takes. So, hopefully he is,” Robert said to Sean Zittel. “Con’s a warrior, man. He’s a warrior. He’s proven it against some of the best fighters in the world that he could compete out there. We’re going to do whatever it takes, but yeah, I think Raymond’s the one that could do it.”

The discussion moved to Muratalla’s future, where Robert acknowledged that making the lightweight limit has become an increasing challenge. The reigning IBF champion has stayed disciplined with his diet and preparation, but his natural size continues to make the cut more demanding. Muratalla looked healthy during Thursday’s final press conference without appearing drained, though he is still expected to enjoy a clear size advantage after rehydrating for Saturday night’s bout.

“Raymond’s a big boy,” Garcia said. “We’re definitely considering this could be our last fight at 135. It’s not easy, but he’s disciplined enough to do it. That’s his obligation as a world champion. He’s doing what it takes to make weight and defend his title. We’re going to have a good talk after.”

The veteran trainer expects Muratalla to become an even more effective fighter once he no longer has to drain himself to reach 135 pounds before each bout.

“I think he’ll be much better. He’ll be much stronger,” Garcia said. “Cutting to 135 takes a lot out of his body, especially when you’re that big. One day is not enough to recuperate 100%. At 140 we’ll see a way better Raymond than at 135.”

A move to 140 also revives the possibility of a fight with Shakur Stevenson. Garcia revealed Shakur previously told him Muratalla was the opponent he wanted, but now believes the matchup belongs at light welterweight rather than lightweight.

“I would love that fight, but not at 135,” Garcia said. “I think 140 would be the best.”
