Roach Wants A Firefight With Zepeda, History Says That’s A Mistake

Lamont Roach Jr. believes he has identified the formula to beat William Zepeda. Whether that plan holds up once the punches start flying is another question.

Training camp has centered on increasing his volume while targeting the defensive gaps left behind by Zepeda’s relentless attack. Roach also believes the Mexican contender’s chin will be tested by the punches he plans to deliver.

“I’m really focused on landing precise shots and capitalizing on his defensive mistakes and exploiting them every round,” Roach said to Fight Hub TV. “Williams has virtually one style, one way. No one has seen him fight a different way.

“Obviously, his output. He throws a lot of punches basically non-stop and comes forward.”

The strategy sounds logical until it is compared with his past fights.

Past performances suggest extended exchanges have not always played to his strengths. Jamel Herring found success trading with him on the way to a unanimous decision victory. Isaac Cruz dropped Roach in the third round after opening up with combinations, and Hector Luis Garcia made their bout far closer once the action turned into a brawl instead of a technical boxing match.

Unlike Gervonta Davis, who spent much of his fight with Roach looking for single counters, Zepeda rarely gives opponents time to reset. His pressure is built around body punching as much as head shots. Those stabbing left hands downstairs slow movement, forcing opponents to plant their feet instead of circling freely. Once that happens, Zepeda continues piling up punches until the pace favors him.

Increasing his own output may not be enough. Fighting at Zepeda’s preferred tempo carries obvious risks. If the body attack takes away Roach’s legs, the fight becomes less about precision and more about surviving sustained pressure. That type of contest has not brought out his best work, making Friday night’s title fight a severe test of durability.
