Harada competed when world championship bouts lasted 15 rounds, and the lower weight divisions featured some of the deepest talent in boxing. He first won the world flyweight title in 1962 by knocking out Thailand’s Pone Kingpetch before moving up to bantamweight, where he faced one of the sport’s all-time greats.
Brazil’s Eder Jofre entered their first meeting in May 1965 with a remarkable 47-0-3 record and was widely regarded as one of boxing’s pound-for-pound best fighters. Harada defeated him by split decision over 15 rounds in Nagoya to capture the WBC and WBA bantamweight titles, handing the Brazilian the first defeat of his career.
A year later, Harada proved the victory was no fluke. He defeated Jofre again in Tokyo, this time by unanimous decision, cementing his place among boxing’s elite.
Jofre’s later accomplishments strengthened Harada’s legacy. After the second loss, the Brazilian moved to featherweight, defeated Jose Legra to win another world title, and retired with a 72-2-4 record and 50 knockouts. Harada finished 55-7-2 before earning induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame.
Japan has produced many outstanding champions, including former flyweight champion Hiroyuki Ebihara, who compiled a 62-5-1 record with 33 knockouts. The discussion over Japan’s greatest boxer almost always comes down to Harada and Inoue.
Inoue’s achievements are unprecedented for a Japanese fighter. He owns world titles in four divisions, has become the undisputed champion in two weight classes, and remains unbeaten at 33-0 with 27 knockouts. His combination of speed, timing, power, and precision has made him one of boxing’s dominant champions.
The argument for Harada rests on the quality of his opposition. Defeating Jofre twice remains one of the greatest accomplishments by any Japanese boxer. Jofre is widely regarded as one of the greatest bantamweights in boxing history, making those victories even more significant.
Inoue owns the deeper championship resume and continues adding to it. Harada, however, built his case by defeating one of the greatest bantamweights ever twice in his prime. Until Inoue’s career reaches its conclusion, the debate over Japan’s greatest boxer remains open.
