Tyson Fury took care of business Friday night, forcing Mariusz Wach’s corner to retire the veteran heavyweight after seven rounds at Max Muay Thai Stadium in Pattaya, Thailand. The victory kept Fury on course for the long-discussed fight with Anthony Joshua, provided Joshua defeats Kristian Prenga on Saturday in Saudi Arabia.

Fury controlled the contest almost from the opening bell, relying on a steady jab, frequent stance switches and accurate combinations. Wach, 46, absorbed plenty of punishment but rarely mounted sustained offense during the seven-round bout.

The biggest surprise before the opening bell came at the weigh-in. Fury came in at 265 pounds, while Wach tipped the scales at 291.4 pounds, making it the first time in roughly 15 years that Fury entered a fight giving away weight to his opponent.

Despite the size difference, Fury dictated the pace. He boxed comfortably through the opening two rounds, mixing orthodox and southpaw while snapping Wach’s head back with jabs. The Polish veteran landed a clean right hand in the second, but Fury barely acknowledged it before returning to work behind his jab.

Wach found another right hand in the fifth round, yet Fury quickly answered by backing him into the corner with uppercuts and short combinations. As the rounds passed, Wach’s legs slowed, forcing him to lean on Fury during clinches while offering little resistance.

By the seventh round, the accumulated punishment had taken its toll. Fury remained patient instead of chasing a dramatic finish, continuing to score with clean punches until Wach returned to his corner exhausted. His trainers chose not to allow him out for the eighth round, giving Fury the technical knockout victory.

The performance lacked the drama of Fury’s biggest nights, but that was never the purpose of this contest. It served as another step following his April decision over Arslanbek Makhmudov, giving him additional rounds before a much larger assignment against Joshua later this year.
