William Zepeda Believes Lamont Roach Misread Shakur Loss

William Zepeda believes Lamont Roach Jr. may be drawing confidence from his recent loss to Shakur Stevenson, but he doesn’t think the result accurately reflects how competitive the fight was.

The two will meet for the vacant WBC lightweight title on August 1 in Las Vegas. Zepeda expects Roach to arrive encouraged after watching him lose against Shakur last July, though he argues the contest was much closer than the official scores suggested.

“He’s coming in motivated. I think that, combined with coming off two competitive fights against good boxers. He’s coming motivated, and I could say a little confident. Maybe it’s also because of my last performance,” Zepeda said during Golden Boy Promotions’ “Camp House” series.

“Him seeing that I’m coming off a loss and a year layoff. But we also have to look at how the defeat was against and how it happened. But I do feel he’s coming in motivated. But we’re preparing very well for the victory.”

Shakur won a unanimous decision over Zepeda on July 12, 2025, in Queens, New York, by scores of 118-110, 118-110, and 119-109. While Shakur earned the victory, many fans viewed the fight as considerably closer than the official cards reflected. Some observers gave Zepeda five rounds, while others believed he should have been credited with a knockdown that was never ruled. Had that call gone his way, the final scores would have been much tighter.

Zepeda believes the Stevenson fight revealed more about his ability than the official scorecards did. He plans to prove that against Roach on August 1.
