Roy Jones Jr. Says Errol Spence Takes Over Late Against Tim Tszyu

The Hall of Famer expects Tszyu to threaten early before Spence’s pressure and conditioning change the fight after Round 6

Roy Jones Jr. expects Tim Tszyu to give Errol Spence difficult early rounds before the former unified champion begins taking control. Jones says Spence’s pressure and conditioning have consistently separated him from elite opponents once fights reach the second half.

Jones Jr. said Tszyu’s best opportunity comes in the opening rounds before Spence settles into his rhythm.

“Man, it’s a hard call, but I’m going with Errol. Hope Errol can withstand the early start that Tszyu is going to probably put up early because if you get past four or five rounds, Errol definitely is going to beat him because Errol, to me, is stronger later than anybody fighting. You get him past round six, and you got a problem in your hand. I don’t care who it is, especially if he ain’t beat up or nothing in the face. You get to round six, you got a problem because that’s when he starts to come alive. Ask Ugas. Ask Brook,” Jones Jr. said to Fight Hub TV.

Roy Jr. compared Spence’s relentless style to Marvin Hagler’s, arguing that constant pressure eventually wears opponents down. He also pointed out that Spence has more technical ability than many people remember from his amateur days, even though he has relied primarily on pressure as a professional.

The matchup remains a difficult one because Tszyu is naturally aggressive and has never been afraid to trade punches. That style may create entertaining early rounds, but it also plays into the kind of fight Spence has often thrived in if he can avoid taking too much punishment at the start.

Jones Jr. believes surviving the opening rounds is the key. If Errol reaches the middle rounds without absorbing significant damage, he expects the former unified welterweight champion to begin taking control with steady pressure and superior stamina.

A victory over Tszyu would put Spence back in the title picture at 154 pounds after a three-year absence from the ring. A loss would leave him facing another setback at a point in his career when every fight carries added significance.
