How do you battle the sun in a baseball outfield?
Most choose to wear sunglasses or maybe use their extra hand to shield their eyes from the sun while keeping an eye on the ball as it flies.
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Gabriel Rincones Jr. began the play in Sunday’s game with his sunglasses on his hat.
As the ball was put into play, he decided to battle the sun by quickly taking the sunglasses off his hat, putting them on and re-finding the ball while it was in the air.
A routine fly ball ended up turning into an impressive highlight that you rarely ever see. While it helped him make the initial catch, the brief delay in losing the ball forced him out of position to throw to the plate.
New York Mets rookie Carson Benge had come to the plate with the bases loaded. While Rincones Jr.’s play was impressive with how it came together, it did allow Juan Soto to score from third base to give the Mets an early 5-0 lead.
Rincones Jr. is in his rookie season with the Phillies. He has played in 22 games this season and has struggled at the plate since getting called up.
The rookie is slashing .171/.202/.300 and has two home runs with six RBI through 74 plate appearances.
Philadelphia went into Sunday’s series finale against New York with a 55-44 record, sitting in second place in the NL East just two games behind the Atlanta Braves.
