The rematch took place at the Great Gorge Playboy Club in McAfee, New Jersey, with Saad Muhammad making the fourth defense of his WBC light heavyweight title.
The Philadelphia champion entered the bout on the heels of memorable victories over Marvin Johnson and John Conteh, while Lopez, a rugged contender from Stockton, California, viewed the rematch as perhaps his final opportunity to become world champion after previous title defeats against John Conteh and Victor Galindez. A victory for Saad Muhammad was expected to lead to a lucrative unification bout with WBA champion Eddie Mustafa Muhammad.
Lopez controlled much of the early action, using his jab, movement and sharp combinations to outbox the champion through the opening seven rounds. Saad Muhammad remained patient, stalking the challenger and looking for opportunities to land his trademark power shots.
The fight turned dramatically in the eighth round. Lopez trapped Saad Muhammad against the ropes and unleashed a furious barrage of punches that appeared on the verge of ending the champion’s reign. Somehow, Saad Muhammad absorbed the punishment without going down, and when Lopez began to tire, the champion stormed back with heavy shots of his own before the bell. The unforgettable round was later named Ring Magazine’s Round of the Year.
From that point on, the momentum belonged to Saad Muhammad. He steadily broke Lopez down with right hands and body shots before closing the show in Round 14. Lopez was knocked down four times before referee Waldemar Schmidt stopped the fight at the 2:03 mark. The official scorecards reflected how competitive the bout had been before the finish, with Paul Cavalier scoring it 125-123, Frank Brunette 125-122, and Schmidt 124-123, all in favor of Saad Muhammad.
Saad Muhammad earned a reported $150,000 for the title defense, while Lopez received $40,000 for challenging. The bout aired nationally on CBS Sports Saturday, giving a wide audience a front-row seat to one of boxing’s greatest championship wars.
Afterward, Saad Muhammad called it one of the toughest fights of his career, acknowledging that Lopez had him in serious trouble during the unforgettable eighth round. Lopez accepted defeat with class, saying, “As much as I wanted the title, he just wanted it more.”
More than four decades later, Saad Muhammad-Lopez II remains the benchmark for action fights. Ring Magazine recognized it as the 1980 Fight of the Year, while its legendary eighth round earned Round of the Year honors, cementing the rematch as one of the defining fights of the 15-round era and one of the greatest light heavyweight title bouts ever contested.
