“We know that Australians are warriors; they bring a big fight and brutal matches,” Charlo said via Kayo Sports. “I’m expecting an all-out war myself.”
Charlo admitted he knows little about Mazoudier and expects to make adjustments once the opening bell rings.
The matchup also continues a frustrating pattern in Charlo’s career. At 36, the unbeaten former two-division world champion has fought only four times since defeating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in September 2020. Only Juan Macias Montiel and Jose Benavidez Jr. were established contenders, while Thomas LaManna and now Mazoudier are tune-up-level opponents.
When Charlo stopped LaManna in six rounds on May 31, 2025, the expectation was that he would finally put years of inactivity behind him and begin fighting on a regular schedule. Instead, he disappeared from the ring for another 14 months before accepting another bout against an opponent outside the top 15 of the WBC, WBA, IBF and WBO.
Mazoudier, 30, has spent most of his career competing at junior middleweight and is moving up two weight classes for the opportunity. While Charlo is promoting the matchup as an “all-out war,” the contest is widely viewed as another tune-up for the former champion, whose career has remained largely dormant despite repeated hopes that he would become active again.
The bout serves as the co-main event to Errol Spence Jr.’s clash with Tim Tszyu. While Charlo is promoting the matchup as an “all-out war,” the contest is widely viewed as another opportunity for him to regain activity before pursuing bigger fights at 168 pounds.
