Haeran Ryu enjoys major breakthrough at Women’s PGA Championship

South Korea’s Haeran Ryu won the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship by two shots after shooting a closing two-under par 70 at Hazeltine National in Minnesota.

The 25-year-old went into the final day with a one-shot lead and relinquished her place at the top of the leaderboard in a fluctuating final round, with three bogeys in the first five holes. But she got back on track with five birdies in a two-under-par round to finish on -13 and capture her first major title and take the £1.48 million winner’s prize.

It marked an almost unbelievable comeback for a player who was tied for 70th and 10 shots off the lead after the opening round. The 2023 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year fought back with a second round 64 and a third round 68 to race to the top the leaderboard on Saturday evening.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson and Dewi Weber of the Netherlands each held the lead following a weather-delayed start to the final round but both finished on -10, tied for third. Ryu’s compatriot Ina Yoon had fallen away on the third day after leading by five, but fought back to finish second on -11.

World no.1 Nelly Korda – chasing a historic third straight major championship win – was four shots off the lead at the start of play but could not move forward, ending tied for eighth on six under after a closing 73.

England’s contingent all failed to make the cut, with Charley Hull missing by one shot after back-to-back 73s, while last week’s runner-up Lottie Woad missed the cut by two shots. Somerset’s Mimi Rhodes was four shots off the cut mark after rounds of 73 and 76.
