Arum Predicts Christian Mbilli Will Bring Canelo Alvarez’s Career To A Crossroads

Bob Arum believes Christian Mbilli won’t just beat Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. He believes the fight will mark the end of Canelo as a championship-level force.

“I think it’s the end of the road for Canelo. Mbilli is a hell of a fighter. Very tenacious, very confident, and I’m looking for him to beat Canelo,” Arum told Mr. Verzace.

It’s a striking prediction considering many fans have viewed Mbilli as a favorable comeback opponent for Canelo following last year’s unanimous decision loss to Terence Crawford. Arum, who has worked closely with Mbilli during the Frenchman’s rise, clearly doesn’t share that opinion.

If Arum is right, the consequences could be significant.

A loss to Crawford was damaging enough. The former undisputed welterweight champion moved up two divisions to defeat Canelo before retiring and vacating the super middleweight titles. Losing a second straight fight, this time to Mbilli, would reinforce the idea that Canelo has entered the stage of his career where younger elite fighters are beginning to overtake him.

That doesn’t mean Canelo would retire. Fighters of his stature rarely walk away after a single defeat, especially with lucrative opportunities still available. But another clear loss would raise legitimate questions about whether he can still compete with the best fighters at 168 pounds.

What makes Mbilli particularly dangerous is his style.

The unbeaten WBC champion isn’t a slick boxer looking to win rounds from the outside. He fights with relentless pressure, throws punches in volume, and has already spoken about pushing a fast pace against Canelo. That’s a difficult style for any opponent, particularly one who has increasingly fights in spurts over the second half of fights.

Even a prime Canelo would have been forced to work hard against a fighter with Mbilli’s engine. The current version of Canelo, now 35 and coming off a loss, faces an even more difficult challenge.

If Mbilli delivers the type of performance Arum expects, the result won’t simply be another defeat on Canelo’s record. It could signal that his days of reclaiming championships from the division’s youngest elite fighters are over.
