Instead, Teofimo skips the line entirely. Winning that WBA strap from Rolly would give him a massive bargaining chip for fights against Devin Haney or the Ryan Garcia vs. Conor Benn winner. It turns a non-performance against Shakur into a golden ticket to the biggest paydays in the sport, all while bypassing the mandatory contenders who actually earned their spot.

The belt becomes a cheat code. Promoters and networks will push the “three-division champion” tag, ignore the soft route and the Shakur beating, and hand him top-tier leverage in multi-million dollar purse splits.

There was no rebuilding fight at 147. Teofimo moved up and went directly into another title opportunity. It is the classic Teofimo magic trick.

He gets to navigate the business of modern boxing in a way that almost no one else can pull off. Instead, Teofimo gets the VIP express lane straight to Rolly Romero and a vacant highway to a third division belt.

Here is the cold, hard reality of why this happens:

Name Value Trumps the Meat Grinder: Teo’s resume already holds the Lomachenko win and the faded-Josh Taylor victory. Promoters and sanctioning bodies do not care that he spent his entire run at 140 side-stepping the true landmines like Subriel Matias, Richardson Hitchins, or Gary Antuanne Russell. They only see the marquee value.

The “Rolly Factor”: Rolly is the ultimate soft target with a belt. He carries maximum name recognition with minimal elite-level danger compared to the rest of the 147-pound landscape. Catching Rolly after a year-plus of inactivity is matchmaking gold.

The Commercial Safety Net: Losing to Shakur did zero damage to Teo’s bankability because everyone expected Shakur to outbox him anyway. Because Teo brings a built-in fanbase, he can fail upward without taking a pay cut or taking a real rebuilding fight.

If Teofimo beats Rolly on August 22, the casual fans and record books will read “three-division champion.” But anyone who watched his time at light welterweight knows he bypassed a whole division’s worth of punishment to get there. It’s utterly pathetic.
