Derek Chisora Delays Retirement For Wilder Rematch

Derek Chisora says the rematch with Deontay Wilder is now likely to become the final fight of his career after receiving what he called the “green light” from his wife to continue boxing.

The 42-year-old Chisora lost a split decision to Wilder on April 4 at the O2 Arena in London, but the reaction inside the arena left room for a second fight after many fans disagreed with the scorecards. Chisora had success during the middle rounds by crowding Wilder and landing looping right hands when the former WBC champion stopped moving his feet.

Wilder still won the fight, but he looked uncomfortable late when Chisora forced exchanges along the ropes. The pace of the fight and the close scoring immediately created talk about a rematch among British fans after the final bell. Chisora said negotiations are already moving forward.

“I’m working on the rematch. The wife has given me the green light, so I will be doing the rematch,” said Chisora to Sky Sports Boxing.

“I haven’t confirmed it yet. I have a couple of meetings tomorrow, and we will see how that goes.”

Chisora originally presented the Wilder bout as the closing chapter of his career, which made his decision to continue surprising given the punishment he absorbed over 50 professional fights.

The British heavyweight has shared the ring with names like Tyson Fury, Oleksandr Usyk, and Dillian Whyte across a long career that has made him one of the most recognizable veterans in UK boxing.

Chisora said Wilder also wants the second fight despite winning the first meeting.

“He is keen because he’s upset with the result as well. Yes, he might have won, but he’s upset, so we are going to run it back.”

A rematch would likely bring renewed scrutiny from the British Boxing Board of Control because of Chisora’s age and the amount of punishment he has taken late in his career. Even so, his willingness to trade and his pressure style still make him a draw in the UK heavyweight scene.

Chisora says the plan remains unchanged after the rematch.

“That’s it. End of this year, I will retire,” said Derek.
