Fabio Wardley Breaks Silence After Daniel Dubois Defeat

Fabio Wardley thanked fans and praised Daniel Dubois after suffering the first defeat of his professional career Saturday night in Manchester.

Wardley was stopped in the 11th round after a brutal heavyweight fight that saw both men hurt repeatedly. Despite being dropped twice early, Dubois recovered and gradually took control with heavier shots and sustained pressure before referee Howard Foster stepped in late in the bout.

Wardley later released a message on social media reflecting on the punishment he absorbed during the fight.

My body failed me, but not my heart. And that I can live with…

Congratulations @DynamiteDubois , thank you for a great fight worthy of the history books.

Thank you to the city of Manchester and everyone that has been along on this journey with me. #TeamWardley ❤️ pic.twitter.com/GRGDTeZZ2c

The official scorecards showed Dubois ahead 96-92 on all three cards at the time of the stoppage after he began taking over during the middle rounds with cleaner right hands and more consistent pressure.

The defeat cost Wardley the WBO heavyweight title and ended his unbeaten run, but the fight also increased his standing with many fans because of the punishment he absorbed while continuing to exchange with Dubois deep into the contest.

People close to Wardley reportedly confirmed that he returned home following treatment at the arena and a hospital visit after suffering cuts and swelling during the fight.

A rematch clause is believed to be in place, although it remains unclear whether Wardley will exercise it immediately after the damage both heavyweights absorbed during the contest.

Dubois could also face pressure from the WBO regarding a mandatory defense against unbeaten heavyweight Moses Itauma, who has increasingly been linked to the title picture following his recent wins. A rematch with Wardley could delay one of the biggest British heavyweight fights currently available.
