Zayas already carries attention as a young contender, but Malignaggi tied his potential rise to the strength of his Hispanic fan base and the kind of support that has historically followed Puerto Rican champions. A victory in a fight of this level would not just raise his standing in the division. It would expand his reach across a wider audience almost immediately.
“You give them a champion like that with all the marketability that Zayas has, they’ll blend in very nicely into the modern boxers, similar to Miguel Cotto, Félix Trinidad.”
Those comparisons point to the scale of the opportunity. Zayas is being viewed as more than a prospect in a competitive weight class. He is being positioned as a potential draw capable of carrying a fan base in the same way past Puerto Rican stars have done.
Malignaggi also made it clear that the stakes run both ways. Ennis enters as one of the most established fighters at 154 pounds, and a win over a rising name with growing attention would strengthen his position near the top.
“This is a fight I think both of them need,” Malignaggi said. “Credit to both guys for making it.”
He also pointed to the effort behind putting the matchup together, noting the push to deliver fights between recognizable names.
“Credit to DAZN for making it, for getting all these promoters together and making these big fights,” said Malignaggi.
There are still other fighters in the division who remain part of the wider picture, including Jesus Ramos Jr., but Malignaggi kept the focus on what this fight can create.
A win would do more than move Zayas forward. It would change how he is seen overnight.
