Josh Kelly calls for U.S. fights, questions American draw power

“Seems like all the big fights are with the Americans,” Kelly posted on X. “I’m here for all that U.S smoke. I bet none are filling a football stadium of 40,000+.”

The Sunderland fighter is coming off a majority decision victory in January that saw him pick up the IBF junior middleweight title, though the result has remained debated. Rather than revisit that performance, Kelly is looking outward, pointing directly at the United States as the next proving ground.

The 2016 Olympian Kelly’s comments come at a time when several major fights involving American fighters are being lined up, including high-profile matchups at welterweight and junior middleweight. Kelly’s post positions him as part of that conversation, while also questioning whether those events can match the scale of a potential stadium night in the UK.

“I’m here for all that U.S smoke,” he repeated, signaling a willingness to travel or meet opponents at agreed weights to secure the fights.

Kelly has long spoken about bringing major events back to Sunderland, and his reference to a 40,000-seat stadium ties directly into that ambition. The suggestion is clear: while the U.S. may control many of the marquee names, the UK still offers a different kind of stage.

Fan reaction to the post has been mixed. Some welcomed the idea of cross-Atlantic matchups, while others pointed to Kelly’s past matchmaking and questioned whether those fights would materialize.

Kelly is making his position known. He wants American names, and he wants them on a stage he believes they can’t match.
