Gary Russell Jr calls out Floyd Schofield after ducking claim

Gary Russell Jr calls out Floyd Schofield after ducking claim

Gary Russell Jr says he wants Floyd Schofield Jr next, but his timing raises questions. Russell reacted on social media after hearing comments from Schofield’s father claiming he had been ducking the fight. The former WBC featherweight titleholder pushed back on that version of events and issued a direct callout.

“I just got on the internet, and they said some s*** that Schofield’s father said that we was ducking him,” Russell Jr. said on X. “Don’t make it seem like you didn’t get a response from me. I want your son now.”

It is hard to take a Gary Russell Jr. callout at face value these days. While his talent was never the issue, his schedule has been. Since 2019, he has basically been the Loch Ness Monster of the featherweight division. Rumored to exist, occasionally spotted, but mostly just a legend people talk about.

Gary Russell Jr. has transitioned from being a “featherweight king on a part-time schedule” to essentially being the veteran mentor/brother of Gary Antuanne Russell. The name brand has faded significantly.

If Floyd Schofield Jr. takes this fight and wins, the narrative is already written. Russell will be 38 by the time they’d likely meet. Moving from 126 to 135 is a massive jump for a guy who was already fighting once every 24 months, and with no tune-up.

Beating a guy who has fought once (against Hugo Castaneda) in four years doesn’t prove Schofield is ready for Tank or Shakur. If Schofield struggles at all, critics will say he couldn’t even dominate a “washed” featherweight, and it’ll hurt his brand.

The win over Castaneda last year was supposed to be the “get-busy” fight for Russell Jr, but here we are a year later with no follow-up. That lack of urgency is exactly why fans have checked out. Russell’s technical brilliance is a memory at this point, not a current threat.

There is almost zero upside for a young prospect trying to build a legitimate resume at lightweight. Schofield is better off hunting for a top 10 lightweight who actually brings a ranking or a belt to the table. Fighting Russell Jr. in 2026 feels like a throwback to an era that’s already passed him by.
