Barboza controlled the fight with his jab, footwork, and careful punch selection, repeatedly keeping Sims at the end of his punches. Sims tried to apply pressure and look for counters, but he spent much of the night trying to close the distance while Barboza kept the fight where he wanted it.

The early rounds established the pattern that carried through most of the bout. Barboza worked behind the jab and mixed in right hands while circling away from Sims’ attempts to step inside. Sims landed a few single counters, but he could not build on them as Barboza kept resetting the distance.

During the middle rounds, Barboza continued to pick his spots and land the cleaner combinations. The South El Monte native stepped in with short bursts of punches and then moved away before Sims could answer.

Sims showed toughness and kept trying to find openings, especially with right hands, when Barboza came within range. Even so, Barboza landed more consistently and kept the exchanges brief.

Barboza stayed composed in the championship rounds and continued working behind the jab. Both fighters traded at times in the final round, though Barboza again appeared to land the cleaner punches as the fight closed.

The judges returned scores of 117-111, 118-110, and 120-108, all in favor of Barboza.

The fight took place at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California. With the victory, Barboza improved to 33-1 with 11 knockouts, while Sims dropped to 22-3-1 with eight knockouts.

After the bout, Barboza said he wants a major opponent next. He called out Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Rolando “Rolly” Romero, saying he is ready to face any of the three in his next fight.
