Zhilei Zhang says a fight between Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua “doesn’t mean a lot” at this point in their careers. It’s like, who cares? These guys are just fighting for cash in a fight with no meaning. If Turki Al-Sheikh wanted to be tough, he’d make Fury & Joshua earn their dough by walking over a bed of hot coals first and facing Martin Bakole.
Zhang notes that the two British heavyweights had talked about fighting years ago when they both held world titles, but now that they don’t, they’re still talking. He sees Joshua-Fury as a fight that would only prove who is ONE of the best heavyweights in the UK, not the best.
For the Joshua vs. Fury fights to prove who is the best British heavyweight, they must defeat Daniel Dubois, Moses Itauma, and Fabio Wardley.
It’s doubtful that either guy can beat those three young lions. Joshua (28-4, 25 KOs) already failed in his fight against Dubois, getting knocked out in the fifth round on September 21st in front of a horde of 90,000 fans at Wembley Stadium in London. Not surprisingly, Fury has no desire to mix it up with Dubois. He knows his limitations.
The whole purpose behind Fury fighting Joshua is for cash. That’s it—just the dough. Neither guy needs the extra money, but they won’t turn it down.
Meaningless Fight
“Usyk is absolutely undisputed, and I think he delivered a much better performance than in the first fight. I had it one-sided. I think he’s the king of the heavyweight division,” said Zhilei Zhang to Secondsout, talking about Oleksandr Usyk’s win over Tyson Fury last week.
“I don’t think that fight means a lot in terms of belts and championships because that fight has been talked about for years,” said Zhang about a fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua. “When both of those two had belts, it was talked about. Now, none of them have belts and they’re still talking about it.
“I think it’s a good way to see who is one of the best heavyweights in the UK, but other than that, I don’t see any meaning for that fight other than bluster,” said Zhang.
It’s not that Fury & Joshua are both washed up at this stage of their careers. They just never were as good as their fans thought they were. Neither of them beat solid fighters like Martin Bakole or Daniel Dubois during their careers.
AJ and the Gypsy King took advantage of the weak opposition that was around and were matched carefully by their promoters.
It would be better if Fury and Joshua beat someone first before meeting in their ‘Battle of Britain’ match in 2025, but they probably won’t bother. Their confidence levels have to be at an all-time low, and they won’t want to take the chance of losing to someone else. Joshua has already had a whole pack of rebuild fights, and it didn’t help. Fury hasn’t beaten a talented fighter in years.
