After feeling what manager Aaron Boone said was tightness near his pitching shoulder, Yankees right-hander Luis Gil was shut down from his bullpen session on Friday and will get an MRI on Saturday, per Boone.
Gil, 26, won the AL Rookie of the Year award last season after going 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA (1.19 WHIP) and 171 strikeouts in 151.2 innings over 29 starts. Following his breakout campaign, New York was counting on Gil to be a big part of its starting rotation that includes Gerrit Cole, newly-signed Max Fried, Carlos Rodon and Clarke Schmidt.
It’s still entirely possible that the righty will be able to pitch this season as the team will await the results of the MRI, however getting shut down is never an ideal situation.
The Yankees took another hit in the pitching department on Friday as well as JT Brubaker, who was hit by a comebacker in a game last week, fractured three of his ribs from the incident. “It’s going to cost him some time,” Boone said.
Brubaker, who was traded from the Pittsburgh Pirates to New York in March of last year, did not pitch for the Yanks in the majors and only managed to pitch 16.2 innings across the minor leagues as he spent most of the season recovering from elbow surgery.
