Giancarlo Stanton, who has been away from Yankees spring training in Tampa this week, will rejoin the club by this weekend, per general manager Brian Cashman, but don’t expect to see Stanton on the field any time soon.
According to Cashman, Stanton received a second round of PRP injections in both elbows, and while surgery doesn’t seem to be on the docket just yet, Cashman said they also can’t rule it out.
“It’d be a last resort… I can’t rule out a surgery, but I know it’s not recommended on the front end of this thing,” Cashman told reporters on Thursday, via MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch. “But obviously if you have a number of different failed attempts then you start looking at different ways of intervention.”
Cashman was also asked why Stanton didn’t begin these PRP injections earlier in the offseason, and he explained that the issues didn’t resurface until Stanton began swinging a bat, which was about three weeks before camp started.
“Ultimately, he was dealing with it at the end of last year and obviously thought we were in a game place and I think he was feeling in a good place” Cashman said, “but then it reared its ugly head about three weeks before camp, is my understanding, so now we’re dealing with it.”
When Stanton does return to the team, he still won’t be able to participate in baseball activities, and he’ll begin the season on the IL
The 35-year-old played through elbow issues last season, slashing .233/.298/.475 with 27 homers and 72 RBI in 114 regular season games. His numbers were much better in the playoffs, though, when he posted a 1.048 OPS with seven home runs and 16 RBI in 14 games.
