Xander Zayas is moving to middleweight after losing his WBA and WBO junior middleweight titles to Jaron Ennis in June. The move may ease the strain of making 154 pounds, but it places Zayas in a division filled with bigger men who will not fear his power.
Chris Mannix reports that Zayas is targeting a February return against a top-15 opponent before pursuing a world title later in 2027.
That is an ambitious schedule for a 23-year-old coming off a seventh-round stoppage. Ennis dropped Zayas three times and took control once he began applying steady pressure. The additional six pounds will not erase what happened or give Zayas the punching power needed to hold off natural middleweights.
Power was never one of his strengths at junior middleweight. He scored 13 knockouts in his first 23 victories, often relying on combinations and movement rather than ending fights with one shot. His punches may carry even less authority against opponents accustomed to taking shots from 160-pound fighters.
Careful matchmaking will be necessary if Top Rank intends to get Zayas into a championship fight before the end of 2027. Yoenli Hernandez would be an especially difficult opponent because of his size, activity and strength.
None of the current champions offers an easy opening. Carlos Adames brings the pressure and power that gave Zayas trouble against Ennis. Aaron McKenna is physically strong and willing to fight at a high pace. Erislandy Lara remains a skilled counterpuncher despite his age, while Denzel Bentley has enough size and power to punish mistakes.
A ranked opponent who allows Zayas to settle into the new division can be found for February. Getting him from that bout to a title opportunity without crossing one of the division’s most dangerous fighters will be the difficult part.
He may feel better at 160, but comfort alone will not make him stronger, more durable, or harder to pressure. His middleweight campaign will depend as much on opponent selection as improvement.
