Wrexham make most expensive signing of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney era that blows previous record out the water

WREXHAM have just made their biggest ever signining, splashing £4million on New Zealand international Liberato Cacace.

The Red Dragons confirmed the deal on Friday, double their previous record fee, which was set by Sam Smith back in January when he joined from Reading for £2m.

Cacace, 24, has made the switch from Serie A side Empoli after impressing in Italy.

The left-back has been a key player for Empoli, racking up 76 appearances in Italy’s top flight.

And if that wasn’t enough, he’s got serious international pedigree too. He captained New Zealand to victory in the 2024 OFC Nations Cup, and he’s earned 33 caps for his country.

Wrexham have already made a few big moves this summer, bringing in striker Ryan Hardie from Plymouth and former Leicester and Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward.

But this deal takes their recruitment to the next level.

Cacace expressed his excitement after sealing the move, saying: “I’m buzzing to join this historic club.

“What they’re building here is something special and I can’t wait to get started.

“The family atmosphere and the tight-knit group really drew me in.”

Manager Phil Parkinson was equally thrilled, adding: “We’re delighted to welcome Libby to the club and can’t wait to get him integrated with the squad.”

The deal sees Wrexham continue their summer spending spree as they gear up for their first-ever Championship season.

The club have been on a meteoric rise, going from non-league to the second tier in just four years with a record-breaking run of promotions.

Wrexham are currently on a pre-season tour of New Zealand, where Cacace was born and started his career with Wellington Phoenix.

He’ll be up against them in a friendly this Saturday, with his new team aiming for their second win on the tour after beating Melbourne Victory 3-0.
