Wolves 2 Everton 3: Toffees climb to fifth after edging five-goal thriller as red-hot Jack Grealish racks up two assists

Wolves 2 Everton 3: Toffees climb to fifth after edging five-goal thriller as red-hot Jack Grealish racks up two assists

JACK GREALISH showed England boss Thomas Tuchel exactly what he is missing.

The day after he was left out of the Three Lions squad to face Andorra and Serbia, the on-loan star inspired Everton at Molineux.

But Toffees boss David Moyes will know his side made this victory harder than it needed to be as Wolves staged a late fightback.

Grealish set up the opening goal, had a hand in Everton’s second and provided the pass for Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to lash home number three.

He produced a display that showed just what he is capable of when he gets a free rein.

He had it at Aston Villa and now Toffees boss David Moyes appears to have let him off the leash.

It is the sort of freedom he rarely had at Manchester City under Pep Guardiola.

This is the version of Grealish that gets people out of their seats.

The figures back it up as well. Grealish recorded two assists in as many seasons for City – a total of 40 games.

He now has four assists in two games – spanning just 163 minutes – following his full debut against Brighton last week.

If he carries on like this, Tuchel will surely not ignore his claims next time – and Grealish, 30 in a week-and-a-half’s time – will surely have his sights set on a World Cup place.

Moyes looks to have unlocked the ability Grealish has always had – he just needed the right stage to show it.

And there could be a few clubs looking on who wish they had pushed to sign him this season.

Grealish was a confident presence on the pitch, telling his team-mates what he wanted and looking frustrated when things did not come off.

And he was doing the hard yards at the end when Wolves hunted for an equaliser.

That said, Wolves offered little in the way of opposition until the latter stages – when they finally put Everton under some pressure.

Far from building on Tuesday’s dramatic Carabao Cup comeback against West Ham, Vitor Pereira’s side took 80 minutes to get into the game – although they had Everton worried by the final whistle.

Newcastle United’s £60million target Jorgen Strand Larsen was watching from a private box after being rested due to an Achilles injury.

Whether that also doubled as a reason to take the heat off Larsen’s transfer situation is unclear.

But Wolves could have used a proven goalscorer like him as they remain pointless after three games.

Hwang Hee-Chan’s first-half equaliser provided Wolves with some hope – as did Rodrigo Gomes’ strike 11 minutes from time.

They were the only bright spots on another miserable day for Pereira’s side – despite threatening a late equaliser.

But Grealish took charge from the start and Everton’s opening goal after seven minutes came as no surprise.

Vitalii Mykolenko’s deep cross found Grealish who headed across the six-yard box for Beto to convert.

Wolves levelled after 21 minutes after a rare lapse from Moyes’ side with their first league goal of the campaign.

Marshall Munetsi’s cross caught Everton napping and left keeper Jordan Pickford in no man’s land.

Hwang nipped in for his first goal since December, wheeling away and pointing to the sky as his grandfather died recently.

But Everton regained the lead when Grealish threaded a pass through for Dewsbury-Hall and he found Illiman Ndiaye for his second goal in a week.

Everton made it three after 56 minutes – and who else but Grealish was at the heart of it.

He found Dewsbury-Hall who rifled home a superb shot into the top corner for his first Toffees strike.

But Wolves added a second when Mykolenko failed to deal with a cross from sub David Moller Wolfe – and Gomes pounced.

Pereira’s side then laid siege to the Everton goal – Pickford saved from Jean Bellegarde in stoppage time and was relieved to see Gomes put the rebound wide.

But they held on and Grealish was given an ovation from the travelling fans when he was subbed near the end – and sang ‘Super Jack Grealish’ at the final whistle
