Wigan SACK manager after dismal 6-1 thumping vs Peterborough… and replaced by Premier League cult hero

WIGAN have sacked manager Ryan Lowe after their 6-1 defeat to Peterborough.

The Latics were thumped by their League One rivals on Saturday.

And the defeat left them third from bottom in the dreaded relegation zone.

But Lowe has now been shown the door by Wigan in a dramatic move on Saturday night.

He will not be in charge of the next game against Reading on Tuesday.

And instead, Wigan will be led out by Premier League cult icon Glenn Whelan.

A statement read: “Wigan Athletic can confirm that they have parted company with Head Coach Ryan Lowe.

“In the interim, Glenn Whelan & Graham Barrow will take on First Team matters, and the Club will work quickly to identify and appoint a new Head Coach of the Football Club.

“The Club would like to place on record its thanks to Ryan for his efforts and wishes him all the best for the future.”

It now remains to be seen who Wigan eventually appoint as their permanent new manager.

Whelan, best remembered for a decade at Stoke, could yet still be in charge for next weekend’s money-spinning FA Cup tie against Premier League title leaders Arsenal.

But it’s the end of the line as far as Lowe is concerned.

He only took charge at Wigan 11 months ago following spells with Bury, Plymouth and Preston.

Lowe managed just 12 wins in 49 outings with the Latics.

Rumours over his future swirled this evening after Wigan cancelled their post-match press conference following the 6-1 defeat to Peterborough.

And the club will now look to save themselves from a potential devastating relegation to League Two.
