The Los Angeles Chargers face some difficult decisions this offseason, but none may be more important than deciding what to do with former No. 3 overall pick Joey Bosa.

Bosa has spent nine seasons with the team and ranks second in franchise history with 72 career sacks. But there is a good chance he has already played his final game in a Chargers uniform. Recent reports indicate the team will move away from him this offseason.

While Chargers fans won’t like hearing that, it is the right move. Here’s why:

First, the most obvious place to start is the financial side of things. The Chargers, who already have the fifth-most amount of salary cap space available at $70.4 million, could add another $25.3 million to that by moving on from Bosa. That kind of cap space would allow the Chargers to be quite aggressive this offseason. It would also give them the money to bring back Khalil Mack if he is interested in a reunion.

A few years ago, it would have been all but impossible to justify cutting Bosa. That is no longer the case. Heading towards 30 years of age, Bosa just hasn’t produced at the rate that he once did and he is not worth the high amount of money he is due this season. He has also battled several different injuries over the years and has had trouble being available.

Bosa can still be an effective player in the league, but he’s no longer a top-tier guy and the savings the Chargers would create by moving on from him are too much to pass up.

These rumors came up last season as well and the thought was that with a new general manager and a new head coach, a new direction would be created. The team decided to keep Bosa and Mack and instead move on from Keenan Allen, Mike Williams and Austin Ekeler.

This offseason, Harbaugh needs to place his focus on making the offense more dynamic and having this extra money to spend makes that a possibility.

Bosa has been one of the best defensive players in Chargers history and he should always be remembered as such. But the decision to move on is an easy one and should be made official sooner rather than later.
