When a new head coach takes over at a team, there is a lot of pressure. They are expected to implement a swift turnaround with significant change, but that is rarely the case.

The Cowboys are one of the most storied NFL franchises. They have long been dubbed “America’s team”, but they haven’t resembled the powerhouse they once were. The organization is always under the microscope now with owner Jerry Jones and the decisions that are made. Last year, Dallas had Mike McCarthy as its head coach but failed to work out an extension with him. Instead, the Cowboys opted to promote former offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer to the position.

Schottenheimer hadn’t been a head coach before, but had been with Dallas since 2022. He is familiar with the team, having served as the offensive coordinator for the last two years. Schottenheimer is going through his first OTAs at the helm, and he had some interesting words about his starting quarterback Dak Prescott.

Here is what Schottenheimer said about Prescott during OTAs.

What did Brian Schottenheimer say about QB Dak Prescott?

Prescott was drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft and became the heir apparent to Tony Romo. Prescott has struggled with injuries at times during his career, but he has already played in 122 regular-season games.

This is why it was a little head-scratching hearing what Schottenheimer had to say about his signal caller. The new Cowboys head coach said that he considers Prescott to be in the “development stage” of his career. He explained that he means that there are things they are tweaking with the quarterback, but it is still weird to hear that the head coach considers his 31-year-old quarterback to be in the developing stage of his career instead of nearing the downswing of his prime, which is typical for his age.
