‘Who the hell declared pitch fit for play?’

THE Uefa Conference League clash between Rijeka and Sparta Prague has been been suspended after just 12 minutes with a new restart time given.

With the score at 0-0 in Croatia, the pitch and conditions were deemed unplayable and referee Robert Jones marched the players to the changing rooms.

There were giant puddles on the grass as the Rijeka vs Sparta Prague match was suspended

A torrential downpour left the ground completely soaked with no choice but to stop the match.

It has now been confirmed that it will kick-off again at 8pm.

The decision to even start the game came into question quickly online with one user writing: “Who the hell declared the pitch in Rijeka fit for play?”

The grass was covered in huge puddles with water on the surface across the pitch.

Fans were forced to try and take cover in the stands as groundsmen got to work on salvaging the situation.

Rijeka, playing at home, did have the ball in the net before the game came to a temporary standstill.

Despite only 12 minutes of action there was still enough time for VAR to get involved.

A review disallowed the game after judging there to have been an offside offence in the build-up.

The hosts lost their opening group phase game whilst Sparta won theirs.

The visitors, braving the storm to travel from Czechia, beat Shamrock Rovers 4-1 in their first match.

Rijeka were beaten by Noah and did so with 10-men for over an hour after going behind to an early goal.
