The eyes of the golfing world will be on the United Kingdom later this year, as Royal Portrush hosts the 2025 edition of The Open Championship.
It will present a huge opportunity for British stars to claim major success, just as Shane Lowry did when the course previously played host to the major.
There will also be increased pressure on the British and European players, as it could be one of the final opportunities to catch the eye ahead of the teams for the 2025 Ryder Cup being announced.
But, who have been some of the standout British golfers throughout the 2025 season to this point?
Shane Lowry
There are few better British golfers on the planet at present than Shane Lowry. The 2019 Open champion has been one of the most consistent in majors throughout recent memory, making the cut in 32 of his 48 appearances at the tournaments at the highest standards.
A return to Portrush this year will make him a standout chance for Open success, where he attempts to win for the second time. Lowry’s consistency sees him rank high on the PGA Tour rankings, as he sits 12th overall.
The Northern Irishman has played 14 events on the Tour this season, missing the cut on just two occasions. He has also finished in the top 25 on ten occasions, picking up over $6 million in prize money.
Tommy Fleetwood
Few players are as popular on the PGA Tour as Tommy Fleetwood. The 34-year-old from Southport, Merseyside, is a seven-time winner on the American Tour, and has also achieved success as part of Team Great Britain, winning the silver medal at the 2024 Olympics.
The ten-time professional winner is typically a popular selection for majors, with many willing Fleetwood to break his maiden. However, despite consistent performances, he is yet to get the win that his play has deserved. Fleetwood’s best efforts have come when finishing second in the 2018 U.S. Open, before finishing in the same spot at the 2019 Open.
He has made the cut in an impressive 29 from 39 events, and has achieved an impressive eight top-ten finishes. This season, the Englishman has made the cut in all 12 of his appearances on the PGA Tour and he has finished in the top 25 in all but two. However, he has only finished in the top ten on four occasions in 2025. Despite that, he sits 13th on the PGA Tour rankings.
Justin Rose
Justin Rose is widely regarded as one of the best British players of the last 20 years. The Englishman, who was originally born in Johannesburg, South Africa, has won 25 professional events during his career, and he was the top-ranked player in the world for 13 weeks in 2018.
Among his 25 professional victories include eleven wins on the PGA Tour. Rose has won events such as Memorial Tournament and Farmers Insurance Open, with his most success on the U.S. tour coming back in 2023 when winning the Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
However, his most significant success to date was achieved back in 2013, as he held off Phil Mickelson and Jason Day to win the U.S. Open. He came extremely close to adding to his major haul early this season, but he was beaten in a tense playoff by Rory McIlroy at The Masters.
Overall, Rose has made the cut in 57 of his 83 major appearances, and he has achieved 23 top ten finished. Ahead of this year’s U.S. Open, he had also achieved top ten finished in three of the last five majors.
Robert MacIntyre
There have been few more progressive golfers on the PGA Tour from the United Kingdom in recent seasons than Robert MacIntyre. The 28-year-old Scotsman turned pro in 2017, and he has played frequently on the DP World Tour throughout his career.
To this point, MacIntyre has accumulated five professional wins, and he currently sits in a career-best 14th in the world. Last season was a coming of age campaign on the American Tour for the Scotsman, as he won two events within the space of six weeks.
The first of those came in the form of the Canadian Open, before he held his nerve the following month to win his home Scottish Open. The Open has been the major where MacIntyre has shown his best form, making the cut on all five appearances, and achieving top ten finishes in both 2019 and 2021.
Right now, he is the British golfer that is more favored for the future PGA tournaments according to bookmakers not on GAMSTOP.
This season, the Scot has made the cut in 13 of his 15 events, and his performances have maintained at a high standard after achieving three top-ten finishes and six top-25 finishes. His best results this calendar year have come at the Charles Schwab Challenge and Phoenix Open, finishing in a tie for sixth in both competitions.
