The Bills have been contenders in the AFC ever since the Josh Allen era began. The talented quarterback has been crucial in leading Buffalo to being one of the teams to beat in the conference.
However, the Bills have yet to reach the Super Bowl with Allen at the helm. Could that change in 2025?
Bills Mafia is among the most devoted fan bases in the league, but it’s been a lengthy period of time since they have been treated to watching their club play in a Super Bowl. The last time the Buffalo organization played for the Lombardi Trophy was before the turn of the century.

Bills Super Bowl history
When was the last time the Bills went to a Super Bowl?
The Bills’ last Super Bowl is a game that Buffalo fans have tried to burn from their memory.
Thirty years ago, the Bills played in Super Bowl 28 against the Cowboys. It was a rematch of the championship game from a year prior, where Dallas thumped Buffalo 52-17.
While it was a closer contest, the Bills came out on the wrong side yet again. Emmitt Smith and the Cowboys ran their way to a second consecutive title. Smith earned MVP honors with 132 rushing yards and two touchdowns, as Dallas outscored Buffalo 24-0 in the second half en route to a 30-13 victory in Atlanta.
It wasn’t just a second consecutive Super Bowl loss to the Cowboys — the loss in 1994 marked the fourth year in a row the Bills reached the Super Bowl but failed to leave with the Lombardi Trophy. Buffalo won the AFC four consecutive seasons; however, the club suffered losses to the Giants, Redskins, and Cowboys twice.
Here’s a look at Buffalo’s previous Super Bowl results.
Game | Date | Opponent | Result | MVP |
Super Bowl 25 | Jan. 27, 1991 | Giants | Giants 20, Bills 19 | Ottis Anderson |
Super Bowl 26 | Jan. 26, 1992 | Redskins | Redskins 37, Bills 24 | Mark Rypien |
Super Bowl 27 | Jan. 31, 1993 | Cowboys | Cowboys 52, Bills 17 | Troy Aikman |
Super Bowl 28 | Jan. 30, 1994 | Cowboys | Cowboys 30, Bills 13 | Emmitt Smith |
How many Super Bowls have the Bills won?
The Bills have yet to win a Super Bowl in franchise history. Despite Buffalo reaching four consecutive title games in the early ’90s, the team left empty-handed in each of those four contests.
There are a total of 12 clubs that never hoisted the Lombardi Trophy — the Bills, Browns, Chargers, Jaguars, Lions, Texans, Vikings, Cardinals, Falcons, Panthers, Bengals, and Titans.
Longest Super Bowl appearance drought
The Bills’ 1994 Super Bowl appearance means that the team has gone 30 years without seeing another championship game. While it isn’t the longest stretch without a Super Bowl showing, it is high up there in comparison to the rest of the organizations in the league.
Among teams who have been to a Super Bowl, the Jets and the Vikings have the longest active droughts. However, it’s the Lions and Browns who own the lengthiest streak of seasons without at the very least playing for a Super Bowl.
Buffalo’s 31-year drought is the seventh-longest in the NFL.
Team | Years Without Super Bowl | Last Super Bowl |
Detroit Lions | 59 | Never |
Cleveland Browns | 59 | Never |
New York Jets | 56 | 1969 |
Minnesota Vikings | 48 | 1977 |
Miami Dolphins | 40 | 1985 |
Washington Commanders | 33 | 1992 |
