Wayne Rooney called out for boxing match by former Premier League goalkeeper who says ‘me and him need to sort it out’

WAYNE ROONEY has been offered out by ex-Prem stopper Paddy Kenny.

Former Sheffield United, Leeds and Ireland goalkeeper Kenny claims Rooney won’t let up about him conceding two stoppage time goals – including the famous Sergio Aguero strike – that cost Manchester United the title in 2012.

And the Red Devils’ record goal scorer has now been handed a shot at revenge.

Kenny is scrapping another former Premier League player, Curtis Davies, at a charity boxing event next month.

But Rooney is the man he really wants.

Kenny told Boxing Social: “He keeps hammering me about that Aguero goal, so I think me and him need to sort it out in the ring.

“13 years on, he’s still saying I let the goals in! It might have looked like I let them in but I didn’t!”

Rooney has already been offered the chance to step into the ring by Misfits Boxing.

But before taking the Plymouth Argyle job last year, which only lasted seven months, the 39-year-old made it clear that his heart was still set on a career in the dugout.

Rooney told The Overlap: “They’ve been in touch and asked the question but I think at the minute I want to focus on getting back into management, not boxing.”

Since his Plymouth tenure ended, Rooney has become a regular fixture on Match of the Day.

Whether the more relaxed schedule will sway him towards Kenny’s offer remains to be seen.

Kenny says a tough training camp leading up to his fight with Davies has done him the world of good.

He continued: “For eight weeks now I’ve been training, been boxing for four or five weeks and in that time I’ve lost over two stone, which is a massive thing.

“That was one of the reasons I wanted to get involved, get myself back into shape.

“It’s for amazing charities, it’s going to be an amazing event down in London, I’m really looking forward to it.”

‘A Night to Remember’ is scheduled for October 18 with David Bentley, Jody Morris, Leroy Lita and Lee Trundle among the other ex-pros in action.
