Warren Believes Sheeraz Has a Shot at Canelo, But First He Must Conquer the Dangerous Edgar Berlanga

Promoter Frank Warren says his fighter, Hamzah Sheeraz, would have a “Chance of beating” Canelo Alvarez if he’s victorious against Edgar Berlanga in their fight on July 12th in New York.

Alvarez Vulnerable?

The problem is, Hamzah (21-0-1, 17 KOs) isn’t expected to beat Berlanga (23-1, 18 KOs) to get what’s left of the depleted Mexican star. Canelo looked 100% shot against William Scull on May 3rd. The way he looked, he’d lose to Sheeraz and in a rematch with Berlanga. Both fighters might have too much firepower for Alvarez, whose work rate has dropped to almost nothing.

Sheeraz is biting off more than he can chew, going up against the cruiserweight-sized Berlanga in his first fight at 168. He should start against a lesser fighter to get him acclimated to the division before taking on a big puncher like Berlanga.

It doesn’t look like Canelo will get past his next opponent, Terence Crawford, on September 12th. Due to his stamina, the smaller, more active Bud Crawford has a good shot at winning that fight.

“Twenty years as a pro, he’s [Canelo Alvarez] been doing it since he was a kid. You look at him and think to yourself, ‘If Hamzah can beat [Edgar] Berlanga, then I’ve got to fancy him to have a chance of beating Canelo,” said Frank Warren to Ring Magazine about his belief that his fighter, Hamzah Sheeraz would have a good shot at defeating Canelo if he gets by Edgar Berlanga on July 12th.

Sheeraz Facing a Beating?

Berlanga is so much bigger and stronger than Sheeraz that he may blast him into the next galaxy in the first few rounds. He hits too hard, and Hamzah looks like he’s got a glass jaw.

You can’t blame Warren for backing his fighter, Sheeraz, against Canelo if he gets that far. However, without a miracle happening on July 12th, he will be weeded out of the Canelo sweepstakes by Berlanga. The only way that Hamzah would have a chance of getting a fight against Canelo if he loses that fight is by Turki Alalshikh wanting to make it happen. I don’t know why he would if Berlanga loses.
