Wales hope former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey can be secret weapon for the World Cup after shock transfer

CRAIG BELLAMY reckons Aaron Ramsey can be a secret weapon if Wales qualify for the World Cup.

The Dragons captain, 34, joined Mexican side Pumas UNAM on a one-year deal in the summer.

Ramsey is back fit again following a long-term hamstring injury.

And Wales boss Bellamy believes his skipper would give his team-mates the inside track with Mexico being one of the hosts for next summer’s global tournament.

Bellamy said: “I’m excited for that and if or when we get to Mexico, or if we have to play over there, then we’ve got first hand experience.

“Tell us everything, tell us what it’s like?

“For example, there’s the altitude. What’s it going to be like if he comes down?

“Live high, train low, you know what I mean? What’s that going to do? Is he going to have more energy?”

Ramsey has been left out of Bellamy’s 25-man Wales squad for the crunch World Cup qualifier in Kazakhstan on September 4.

The Dragons are still second in Group J, a point behind leaders North Macedonia, albeit having played two games more than third-placed Belgium.

Bellamy’s Wales also have a friendly with World Cup co-hosts Canada in Swansea five days later.

Ex-Arsenal and Juventus star midfielder Ramsey made his debut in Mexico last week and is due to face Atlas in the Liga MX tonight (Sun).

And, despite ignoring him for the upcoming international double-header, Bellamy has opened the door for Ramsey to make an October comeback.

Ramsey won the last of his 86 caps in the Nations League win over Montenegro in September 2024.

Bellamy added: “Yes. We want to speak to him, I don’t look too far ahead.

“I want you training, playing games, get minutes, and then we’ll see where we are at that time.

“I spoke to him before he was going to do it, so I knew. We have a long relationship over a number of years, so I’m keenly fond of him. And I was quite excited for him, I really was.

“I just want him to be happy. If you’re not ready to retire – keep playing.

“Don’t have that lingering thought and play as long as you want, as long as you’re happy.

“If he’s in condition, I look back at the Turkey game, that’s the only game I’ve really had him. And he was immense.

“I played him like a false nine and some of the balls he was able to play for our runners, because we have top runners.

“I can’t get that anywhere else. Give me another Aaron Ramsey? Buy me one! There isn’t.

“That ability, that doesn’t go.  And he’s still got football in his legs.

“We’ll see. He’s available. You cannot not look at him. It’s impossible. We’re always quick to try and retire people. It’s not our right to.

“When they’ve earned that, leave it to them.

“And the moment he says no, then, ‘Where’s your statue?’ Then we’ll do that for you. Because he’s been the most incredible player.”
