Going into the contest both of these undefeated southpaws were known for having contrasting styles that could not be any more different. Zepeda is a relentless pressure fighter known for his incredible stamina, toughness, and determination. On the other hand Stevenson is more of a defensive tactician known for his great technical ability. The contrast in styles was on full display throughout the fight, but not necessarily in the same way many fans anticipated going in.

It wound up being a hard fought battle, where Stevenson was fighting the type of fight that seemed to favor the attributes of Zepeda. It wound up producing a brilliant clash. Zepeda got off to a strong start, where he was intelligently applying effective pressure and forcing Stevenson to fight at a pace faster than he is accustomed to dealing with. But as the rounds progressed, Stevenson started finding a nice groove where he was landing harder, sharper, and cleaner, despite the fact Zepeda was usually throwing more punches.

At the end of 12 rounds of highly entertaining action, Stevenson was awarded a 12 round unanimous decision. Two of the judges scored the fight 118-110, and the other had it 119-109, all of which seemed wider than the action dictated in the eyes of most fans. Both boxers put forth a strong performance in this one, and it will be interesting to see where they each go from here. With the victory, Stevenson has made three defenses of his WBC championship at 135. The three division champion’s perfect record improved to 24-0.

This edition of Rummy’s Corner will provide a brief recap and review of the fight between Stevenson and Zepeda, along with some highlights and opinions about each man’s performance. Please watch and enjoy the video for one man’s opinion. This is Rummy’s Corner (produced and narrated by Geoffrey Ciani).
