Unified three-belt champion Oleksandr Usyk and IBF belt-holder Daniel Dubois will meet for the undisputed heavyweight championship in a rematch on July 19th at Wembley Stadium in London.
Wembley Doubt
Staging the rematch at Wembley Stadium is a questionable move by the promoters because there’s not enough interest from fans in seeing the Usyk vs. Dubois 2 rematch for it to sell outt that venue. It would be better to stage it at Wembley Arena.
Dubois, 27, might be making a mistake by choosing to take the rematch with Usyk, because if he loses this fight, it’s going to take the air out of his rejuvenated career. He just recently climbed his way back to the top with three consecutive wins over Anthony Joshua, Filip Hrgovic, and Jarrell Miller.
Their fight was pushed back a week from July 12th due to the New York City event being staged on that day, with Shakur Stevenson battling William Zepeda in a must-see fight, and several other good matches on the card. Ring Magazine broke the news of the new fight date for the Usyk-Dubois 2 rematch.
Fans have mixed reactions towards the Usyk-Dubois rematch happening now. Many would prefer to see Usyk defend against WBO mandatory Joseph Parker rather than seeing a second fight between Usyk (23-0, 14 KOs) and Dubois (22-2, 21 KOs). They already saw Dubois quit when the going got tough two years ago against Oleksandr, and they’re not super excited at seeing the two fight again.
Other fans want to see Anthony Joshua fight Dubois again to see if he can avenge his fifth-round knockout loss from September 21st last year. There would be a lot of interest from people to see if AJ can turn things around or be sent into retirement by Dubois with another KO loss.
Seeking Revenge
Dubois will finally get the opportunity to avenge his ninth-round knockout loss to Usyk from two years ago on August 26, 2023, in Wroclaw, Poland. That’s the fight that many fans believe Dubois was robbed of a knockout after he dropped Usyk with a body shot in the fifth. The referee ruled it a low blow.
Usyk has single-handedly ruined the British heavyweight scene, beating the three fighters that UK fans have been following:
– Tyson Fury x 2
– Anthony Joshua x 2
– Daniel Dubois
