US Open suffers travel chaos as fans miss start of action and forced to walk along highway to reach Flushing Meadows

DAY TWO of the US Open was marred by travel chaos.

Credentialed individuals had to abandon their vehicles and walk along the highway.

On Monday morning, there was significant traffic congestion on the roads.

That was around the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows in the northern part of Queens.

Play on site starts daily at 11am.

However, many spectators were late arriving due to a build-up in the local area.

Players, coaches, members of the media and other people wearing US Open passes were forced to leave a bus.

It had remained stationary in traffic for long periods.

Eleanor Crooks, a respected member of the media, was among those who had to take invasive action.

She waited 90 minutes to complete a journey that normally takes half an hour.

Crooks, who works for the UK’s Press Association, jumped on the 10am bus that left the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan.

Yet by 11.30am it had still not reached its destination, outside of the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

The reporter posted a photo on X showing fellow passengers.

It included some people carrying tennis racquet bags, walking by the side of the freeway.

She said: “The worst thing about this tournament is the journey from Manhattan.

“Players among those who have given up on the buses and chosen to walk along the freeway.”

It is understood the New York City Police Department were far from happy that people had left the buses.

However, no arrests are believed to have been made.

It is not known if any fans had followed suit and tried to walk the last hundred metres to get into the site.

The Sun has contacted the USTA for comment.

Meanwhile, the action got underway at the US Open without them.

Petra Kvitova saw her career come to an end.

She lost in the first-round and broken down in tears as the 35-year-old retired from tennis.
