Pegula* 0-0 Krejcikova
Barbora Krejcikova won the toss and has elected to receive.
Luckily for her, she will be in the shaded part of the court for the opening game.
It is gone 11.30am and the temperature is 23C (73F) with humidity at 49%.
The weather this past fortnight in New York has been wonderful.
It has not reached incredibly insane levels and thankfully there have been no incidents of players dropping like flies due to the oppressive heat, which has happened in previous years.
We are about to start
Barbora Krejcíkova and Jessica Pegula are about to enter the Arthur Ashe Stadium for the first women’s quarter-final.
Pegula gets a decent reception as she walks out with her headphones on.
It is a healthy crowd inside the arena. Half of the court is in direct sunlight so that might be an issue for anyone serving down one end.
Pegula had just put on some sun cream to ensure she is not burnt while playing.
Czech mate?
Barbora Krejcikova will not be a pushover for Jessica Pegula.
She is a two-time Grand Slam champion, winning the French Open in 2021 and then Wimbledon last summer.
She has also won doubles titles at all four Slams, on all three surfaces.
The Czech player survived EIGHT match points as she came from behind to shock American Taylor Townsend 1-6 7-6 6-3 in one of the most dramatic matches of this year’s US Open.
That performance alone, when she was on the cusp of being eliminated, might make her feel, justifiably so, that her name is on the trophy on Saturday evening.
