Four-time British Touring Car champion Colin Turkington, who made his GT Cup debut at Donington Park last weekend, says he is keen to contest more races in the discipline.
The Northern Irishman, who had to relinquish his BTCC seat at the West Surrey Racing BMW team this season due to commercial issues, shared the 24/7 Motorsport Ginetta G56 of Patrick Collins.
They finished third in the GT4 class, and Turkington set some very representative lap times during his 50-minute stint of the GT Cup’s opening enduro of the season.
“Obviously the touring car programme didn’t happen for me this year, so I just want to explore new opportunities, keep myself driving and keep sharp,” said Turkington.
“I tried to put something together in British GT, which unfortunately didn’t come off. I got speaking to 24/7 and this opportunity came up.”
Turkington added that he was keen to get into a GT paddock and gain some experience in GT4.

“I wanted to see what it’s all about and start the learning process – it’s a different world for me,” he explained.
“I think the GT4 is quite representative of a touring car, whereas I imagine a GT3 is a different world altogether. That would be great but, for now, I’m really enjoying this and I think it’s a good place for me to start.
“The guys at 24/7 have been super-helpful in just getting me up to speed. I think I’m ready to explore some fresh opportunities.
“This is just a one-off at the moment, but we’ll see what develops now.”
The GT Cup outing was not Turkington’s first in club racing this year. He also contested the British Racing & Sports Car Club’s two-hour Supersport Endurance Cup race at Silverstone a couple of weeks ago in a Mk3 Mazda MX-5 alongside Bruce Robinson. The duo won their class and finished fifth overall.
