Top NHL prospect playing high school football in fall

Mason West isn’t quite ready to give up playing alongside his high school football teammates just yet.

West, who regarded as one of the top North American prospects in the upcoming 2025 Upper Deck NHL Draft, plans to hit the gridiron in the fall for his Edina High School team in Edina, Minnesota. From there, West will begin what he hopes is a long and successful professional hockey career.

Last season, West completed 178 of 244 passes for almost 2,600 yards with 37 touchdowns and just four interceptions. He stands 6-foot-6 and weighs 215 pounds while having recorded 27 goals for Edina on the ice rink.

“I’ll play football in the fall and then head to Fargo (United States Hockey League),” West told NHL.com. “It was really important for me to play football as a senior with my friends. I always set goals for the year, and that was to win a state high school hockey championship and als a football championship.”

West has one of those goals remaining on his list.

“I haven’t done it in football,” he said, “so I kind of want to achieve that and stay loyal to my team because I think they need me.”

NHL Central Scouting has West ranked No. 27 in its final ranking for North American skaters who are eligible for the draft. In the 2023 USHL futures draft, he was picked in the fifth round, scoring nine points over 10 games for Fargo.

While West has yet to commit to a college, he has it down to either Michigan State or Boston College. During the scouting combine for the NHL, he was interviewed by 27 teams.

“I would say my best asset is my shot,” West said. “I really think I have a good shot when I can get it off quick. I think I have really good awareness and vision on ice.”
