During the face-off, the former WBO junior middleweight champion Tszyu (24-2, 17 KOs) bent toward, looking like he was ready to jump Spencer (19-1, 11 KOs). It was the same pose that Tszyu, 30, used for his last fight against IBF 154-lb champion Bakhram Murtazaliev, and that match turned out to be a disaster for Tim.
Spencer’s Confidence
The American, Spencer, 24, didn’t look worried by Tim’s attempts to intimidate him. He put up his guard to show that he was ready to fight.
The event starts at 9 pm ET/6 pm PT. The ring walks are at approximately at 11:30 ET/8:30 pm PT.
Weigh-in Results
– Tim Tszyu 154 vs. Joey Spencer 153.75
“His name is ‘The Soul Taker,’ and he got his soul taken,” said Joey Spencer to the media, talking about Tim Tszyu’s monicker before getting knocked out in three rounds by IBF junior middleweight champion Bakhram Murtazaliev on October 19th.
Tszyu cannot afford to lose this fight because he’s coming into the match against Spencer with a two-fight losing streak. Obviously, the American Spencer was chosen for a reason by Tszyu’s team, as they clearly see him as beatable.
They could have picked a highly ranked 154-lb contender, like Serhii Bohachuk, Israil Madrimov, Charles Conwell, or Yoenis Tellez. You can figure out why Team Tszyu selected Spencer over one of those guys. That’s why it’s important that Tim win this fight because if he can’t beat a low-ranked fighter like Spencer, who has likely been well-vetted by his team and deemed a no threat, it’s career over.
“It’s not all about what he does. It’s about what I do as well. It’s going to be two guys in there in the ring, and we’re going to have to adapt and adjust to each other. I’m not arrogant enough to say that I’m going to be able to choose what I do in this fight, and he’s not going to respond,” said Spencer.
“We’re both going to have to respond to each other. I believe this is going to be a competitive fight. That means there’s going to be ebbs and flows and adjustments to be made.”
