Thomas Hearns Destroys Pipino Cuevas To Win First World Title

Thomas Hearns announced himself as boxing’s newest force on August 2, 1980, blasting out WBA welterweight champion Pipino Cuevas in two rounds before a roaring hometown crowd at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The emphatic stoppage handed the 21-year-old his first world title and signaled the arrival of a future Hall of Famer.

Promoted as World War II, the bout came less than two months after Sugar Ray Leonard defeated Roberto Durán in Montreal. The welterweight division featured stars such as Leonard, Durán, Wilfred Benítez and Carlos Palomino, yet Cuevas entered as one of its most intimidating champions. His crushing left hook carried him through 11 successful title defenses, convincing many that another knockout awaited the unbeaten challenger.

Hearns (28-0, 26 KOs) held the USBA welterweight title under the guidance of Emanuel Steward at Kronk Gym. Cuevas (27-6, 24 KOs) received the larger purse at a reported $1.5 million compared to $500,000 for the challenger, but roughly 12,000 fans inside Joe Louis Arena backed the hometown favorite.

Hearns refused to let Cuevas establish his trademark pressure from the opening bell. His snapping jab repeatedly found the target while straight right hands pierced the champion’s defense. Cuevas struggled to work his way inside as Hearns controlled the range with speed, timing and accuracy. A sharp left hook briefly staggered the Mexican champion before another series of right hands left him badly shaken at the bell.

A crushing right hand ended matters in the second round, sending Cuevas face first onto the canvas for the first knockdown of his professional career. He beat the count, but his legs betrayed him. Trainer Lupe Sanchez climbed into the ring before the action resumed, prompting referee Stanley Christodoulou to stop the fight at 2:39 of the second round.

The knockout launched Hearns toward superstardom. He defended the WBA championship, met Sugar Ray Leonard in one of boxing’s biggest fights the following year, and eventually captured world titles in six weight divisions. Many historians regard the destruction of Cuevas as the night Thomas Hearns established himself among boxing’s elite.
