The offseason journey of the Pittsburgh Steelers continues today, as they are set to meet with wide receiver, Gabe Davis. Davis had his best seasons in a Buffalo Bills uniform (2020-2023), where he caught for 836 yards and 7 touchdowns in 2022. Steelers fans should be well aware of Davis’s potential, as he torched Pittsburgh’s defense back in 2022 for two touchdowns and 171 receiving yards.
However, this is not the first time that the Steelers have looked into signing Davis. Last season before signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars, the Steelers heavily considered acquiring him while looking for a WR2. Bills sideline reporter, Sal Cappacio said on 93.7 The Fan, “I’ll tell you, because I got to know Gabe and his reps a little bit. Pittsburgh was interested in him when he was a free agent the first time around.” After being released by the Jaguars, Davis seems to be in the same situation with Pittsburgh as he meets with them today.
While his production may have fallen off the last few seasons, the question isn’t what he could provide statistically in the Steelers offense…rather what he can provide for other Steelers’ receivers. To do this, diving into Stefon Diggs’s stats while playing alongside Davis may give a glimpse of what DK Metcalf could produce with him on the roster.
Diggs was a receiver with Davis during the same time frame (2020-2023) and excelled through his four years with him by his side. Through each season he had 1,536, 1,225, 1,429, and 1,183 yards respectively. Likewise, he had between 8 and 11 touchdowns each year in Buffalo’s offense.
This may not parallel exactly to the Steeler’s offense and DK Metcalf, but it certainly can provide a boost to a team who could use another wide receiver to take the pressure off Metcalf. A Gabe Davis acquisition may not be a jaw-dropping move, but it can lead the Steelers in the direction of success…and that is what Art Rooney, Mike Tomlin, and Steeler’s fans are looking for.
