Knicks star Jalen Brunson suffered an injury — seemingly to his right ankle — with just over a minute left in New York’s overtime loss to the Lakers in Los Angeles on Thursday night.
While there hasn’t been an official designation or information on the severity of Brunson’s injury, Chris Haynes reports that there’s “optimism” Brunson only sustained a sprained ankle.
Brunson’s injury occurred with just over a minute to go in overtime when he drove to the basket before being fouled and falling to the ground.
The point guard immediately clutched his lower leg in obvious pain and stayed down for a bit before being helped to his feet.
Brunson remained in to sink two free throws to tie the game, before walking slowly and gingerly to the locker room.
He did not return.
The timing of Brunson’s injury is especially unfortunate, with the Knicks about to play the second game of a grueling five-game West Coast swing.
With 20 games left in the regular season, New York is 40-22 and in third place in the Eastern Conference. They are 3.5 games ahead of the Bucks for the No. 4 seed and 4.5 games behind the Celtics for the No. 2 seed.
Brunson has played all but two games this season, averaging 26.1 points and career-best 7.4 assists per game while averaging 35.4 minutes per contest.
