Look, it’s not fair to put all of the blame on Thairo Estrada and the Colorado Rockies here. The rain was really coming down hard at Coors Field on Wednesday night.
But this blunder, which was perfectly fitting for how things have gone so far this season in Denver, was absolutely brutal.
But this error was absolutely brutal.
Los Angeles Dodgers third baseman Max Muncy hit what looked like a routine infield fly ball in the sixth inning of their matchup with the Rockies on Wednesday. But, just a few seconds after he called for the ball, Estrada completely reversed course. He suddenly covered his head in a panic, and everyone around him — including Muncy — was lost.
The ball dropped to the dirt, Muncy was safe at first, and the Dodgers actually scored two runs on the play to take the lead for the first time. Just watch:
Not great. But, in their defense, the game was sent to a rain delay right after this.
Still, the moment was just the latest example of how bad things have gone for the Rockies so far this season. The team entered Wednesday night with just an 18-61 record, which is by far the worst in the league. They fired manager Bud Black in May after a 7-33 start, the team notched the worst 50-game start in MLB history last month, and they are just 8-30 at home this summer.
Rain or not, the Rockies clearly still have a lot of work to do if they’re going to avoid the record the Chicago White Sox set last season.
