Thompson had twice recovered from the disease during his playing career, which began and ended with Rochdale.

He had come through United’s academy from the age of nine before going on to join the Dale, where he spent the vast majority of his 13-year career.

The couple welcomed their first child, a daughter named Thailula-Lily, in September 2014 and had a second daughter in 2022 named Athena Rae.

Tragically Thompson and his wife, Chantelle, also revealed they had lost their baby boy, whom they named Dre Phoenix Thompson, at 40 weeks pregnant in 2021.

However, taking to Instagram last week, Chantelle shared wonderous news she is now expecting a new baby Thompson after the “hardest year of our lives”.

She shared a photo alongside her baby daughters showing a positive pregnancy test.

A video of the moment the result was revealed was also shared on the post, showing off the family’s excitement as the news was revealed.

Chantelle, who married late husband Joe in 2016 after dating for a long time, said: “From Darkness to Light!

“After the hardest year of our lives, we have the most incredible news to share… We are expecting a baby Thompson.”

She shared how going through the IVF journey had given her a “beautiful opportunity” and how she was following the “right path” after discussions with her late partner about having more children.

Chantelle continued: “After the unimaginable heartbreak of losing Joe and our baby boy at 40 weeks pregnant, I never knew what the future would hold.

“Going though the IVF journey with Dre has now given me the beautiful opportunity to use a frozen embryo from my previous IVF round.

“Joe and I spoke so often about having more children and he had experiences before he passed and told me a baby would come… he even told me the baby’s name.

“Deep in my soul, I know this was the right path and everything is unfolding as it should.

“This journey has been so different without Joe physically by my side but we know he is here with us, guiding us, protecting us, and walking every step alongside us in spirit.”

Congratulatory messages came flooding in following the announcement.

Man Utd Women star Ella Toone replied: “Amazing,” alongside a pair of heart emojis.

TV personality Scott Thomas said: “Unbelievable! Let’s gooooo Joe.”
