Jermell Charlo posted on social media, saying he’s got a “fight date coming,” hinting that he could be facing his old gymmate Errol Spence. The post picture showed a lion with a great white shark in its mouth.
“No friends in the industry,” said Jermell Charlo on social media, hinting that he could be returning from a two-year layoff to fight Errol Spence Jr.
From Gym Mates to Foes
Charlo and former IBF, WBA, and WBC welterweight champion Spence (28-1, 22 KOs) have both been inactive since 2023. The two used to share the same gym in Dallas, Texas, and were both trained by Derrick James.
The former undisputed junior middleweight champion Jermell (35-2-1, 19 KOs) has not fought since losing a one-sided 12-round unanimous decision to Canelo Alvarez two years ago on September 23, 2023. Charlo reportedly received a payday estimated to be between $6 million and $20 million for the fight.
Jermell’s inactivity, coupled with his non-performance against Canelo, would make it difficult to sell a PPV event involving Spence. What fans found troubling is that Jermell didn’t even attempt to win the fight after the first couple of rounds. They complained of his going into survival mode, choosing to move around to keep from getting knocked out. They believe that Charlo just came for the paycheck.
The success of the event would come down to Errol’s fanbase because he was the more popular of the two before he abruptly stopped fighting after suffering a ninth-round knockout loss to then WBO welterweight champion Terence Crawford on July 29, 2023.
Age and Viability Concerns
If Turki Alalshikh gets involved, that would be the ideal situation for Ennis and Charlo. But it might not be worth it, given their advanced ages and the viability of the two beyond this fight. It’s one thing for Turki to finance a fight between an aging 37-year-old Crawford and a 35-year-old Canelo; it doesn’t make sense for him to do it for a fight between Errol and Jermell because both are coming off losses.
The chances of Jermell and Spence beating the top fighters at 154 are slim. Before Charlo stopped fighting, he was struggling to beat the likes of Brian Castano and Tony Harrison. Those fights showed Jermell’s level.
