Texans sign controversial 1st-round pick making NFL comeback after 3 seasons away

The Houston Texans gave out a second chance on Wednesday.

They agreed to a deal with Damon Arnette to sign with their 90-man roster in an attempt to make an NFL comeback.

The former first-round cornerback hasn’t played in the NFL since 2021.

Arnette was the 19th overall pick in 2020 by the Raiders.

He started seven games as a rookie, but an injury and then off-field problems caused a quick downturn.

In November 2021, Arnette was released by the Raiders after a video came out of him making threats while carrying a firearm, per Pro Football Talk.

The Chiefs briefly signed Arnette to a future contract a few months later, but they released him after he was arrested for assault.

Arnette played in the UFL and played well, which brought him back on the NFL radar.

Now, the Texans have decided to get him into their facility. They’ll have a chance to see and speak with Arnette up close to both understand who he is as a person and who he is as a football player.

There’s far from any guarantee of an actual NFL roster spot here when the regular season rolls around.

But if Arnette can still play, that has a tendency to win out in the NFL above everything else, rightfully or wrongfully.

The Texans clearly think there’s still talent to be tapped into here.
